Dentures at Smile Care Dentists Plymouth
Unlike bridges and implants dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth typically made out of an acrylic resin which at times incorporate porcelain or metal for additional structural support.
Three types of dentures are available:
Complete Dentures (when all the teeth are missing)
Partial Dentures (when some natural teeth remain)
Overdentures (placed over natural teeth/roots or over dental implants)
All Complete Dentures, Partial Dentures and Overdentures are finely crafted, custom-fitted. If you properly maintain your dentures they will appear natural and provide a perfect smile. Moreover, dentures help strengthen muscles controlling your expressions that require the support of your teeth, rid you of pronunciation problems caused by missing teeth and aid with chewing.
Complete Dentures can be either conventional or immediate.
A conventional full denture is made and placed after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed which may take several months.
An immediate complete denture is made in advance and inserted as soon as the remaining teeth are removed. We take measurements and make models of the patient’s jaws during a preliminary visit. With immediate dentures, the denture wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared with conventional dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.
A removable partial denture usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-coloured plastic base, which is connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, but also it prevents other teeth from changing position.
Our dentures range from standard acrylic through metal chrome-cobalt ones to fixed appliances utilising special precision attachments – overdentures.
Loose, ill fitting dentures that move or fall out when patients are speaking or eating may cause suffering and embarrassment. One solution is a special type of dentures that goes over and attaches to something underneath – overdenture.
Overdenture is a great denture alternative and helps to eliminate many of the problems that denture wearers experience.
Overdenture goes over natural teeth or over dental implants. It is secured by precision dental attachments which fasten an overdenture to the jawbone, much in the way natural teeth are anchored. The attachments are composed of two working components: the root post – cemented into your tooth roots or an implant abutment threaded into your dental implants (which have been placed specifically for the overdenture attachment) and the denture cap which is retained in the underside of your denture.
Keeping a few natural teeth or placing dental implants in the bone under the denture also helps keep the jaw bone healthy. This avoids much of the bone loss often seen in the jaw after teeth are removed.
Advantages of overdentures:
- they prevent bone loss (dental implants actually strengthen the surrounding bone structure), aesthetic appeal, improved speech (when compared with other types of dentures), proper jaw alignment, improved chewing efficiency (by up to 300%), attachments provide the retentive strength and stability.
